Your plan should fit your race and your actual training. A runner who practiced 3:1 run-walk intervals should not switch to continuous running because the corral feels exciting. A runner who used course drink on long runs does not need to carry a vest solely because the forecast changed by a few degrees. Use rehearsed options, apply the hilly-course strategy where the elevation demands it, then adjust effort when conditions demand it.
Race preparation also has limits. A checklist cannot diagnose symptoms, guarantee a finish, or turn an unrealistic target into a suitable one. Official organizer messages, on-site medical instructions, road closures, and current conditions take priority over a generic guide.

Read the official race information like a participant
Confirm the date, wave, and start location
Do not rely on a calendar entry created months ago. Check the organizer's current participant guide for start time, assigned wave, corral closure, and whether the start and finish are in different places. A 7:00 a.m. gun may require arrival ninety minutes earlier.
Save the guide and key addresses offline. Mobile service may be congested near a large start, and a rideshare pin may not work inside road closures.
Map transportation backward
Start with corral closure, subtract bathroom and bag-check time, then subtract walking, transit, parking, and contingency time. The result is your leave time. Add the wake, breakfast, dressing, and final-check sequence before it.
If using a shuttle, confirm boarding—not only departure—requirements. If driving, identify the exact garage and road closures. If someone drops you off, agree on a legal location beyond the start-zone bottleneck.
Know course support and rules
Mark water and fuel stations, bathrooms, cutoff checkpoints, bag restrictions, headphone policy, and prohibited items. If the event supplies a product you plan to use, practice it first. If it does not, choose and rehearse your carrying method.
Check whether timing uses gun or chip time for cutoffs. A generous final limit can still include rolling checkpoints that matter earlier.

Taper without trying to feel perfect
What a taper does
A taper is a planned reduction in training load before competition. The aim is to let accumulated fatigue decline while maintaining the movement patterns and fitness already built. It does not create new endurance in the final week.
A 2023 systematic review and meta-analysis of endurance tapers found support for reducing training volume while preserving some intensity and frequency. The studies included different sports, athletes, and taper designs, so use the broad principle rather than treating one percentage as universal.
Why the taper can feel strange
Less running creates more time to notice sensations. Legs may feel flat on one short run or restless after a rest day. Neither predicts the race by itself. Avoid testing fitness to obtain reassurance.
Keep sleep, meals, and daily movement reasonably familiar. Do not turn extra time into a hard strength session, a long sightseeing day, or a last-minute home project.
What to do with a missed peak run
Do not move a missed long run into the taper. The intended adaptation cannot arrive on command, while the fatigue can. Continue with the reduced schedule or seek individualized advice if the missed training changes whether the goal is realistic.
A race start is not mandatory. If illness, pain, or insufficient preparation makes participation uncertain, entry fees and travel plans do not provide medical or training clearance.
Freeze the race kit before race week
Shoes and socks
Use a pairing worn on a meaningful long run. Check laces, outsole, and weather suitability. A fresh color or plated model is not an upgrade if it is untested.
Clothing and anti-chafe

Load the belt, pockets, handheld, or vest exactly. Confirm race rules and whether on-course support removes the need to carry more.
Watch and phone
Charge, set displays and alerts, disable surprises, and know the battery life. Have a no-GPS fallback using effort, elapsed time, and course markers.
Pre- and post-race layers
Plan for waiting and for leaving in dry clothing. Follow bag-check and clothing-donation instructions rather than abandoning gear on the course.
Plan breakfast and fuel from rehearsals
Breakfast is a timing problem as well as a food choice
Use the meal or snack practiced before long runs, at a timing your stomach tolerated. Travel races may remove your usual kitchen, so identify a hotel or portable version before leaving home.
The joint sports-nutrition position statement supports carbohydrate availability for endurance performance, but general guidance is not an individualized meal plan. Do not force an unfamiliar quantity because a chart gives a high target.
Carry the race plan, not the pantry
Count the gels, chews, or drink servings required by the practiced timing and add at most a familiar spare where useful. Decide which pocket holds each item. Reaching for fuel should not require unpacking a bag while running.
Take products with water in the way you rehearsed. Concentrated carbohydrate and unfamiliar sports drink together may alter tolerance.
Know where general advice stops
Diabetes, gastrointestinal disease, food allergy, kidney or heart conditions, medications, and eating-disorder concerns can change fueling or hydration decisions. Seek qualified individualized care rather than adapting race-week internet guidance.
Do not use a race to test fasting, aggressive carbohydrate restriction, or a supplement protocol. The final days reward familiarity.

Warm-ups for different race goals
A warm-up should make the first mile feel familiar without spending the energy you need later. Use only movements practiced in training.
Finish-focused or run-walk warm-up

The first two miles should feel restrained
Crowds, music, and fresh legs make goal pace feel unusually cheap. The danger is not one fast ten-second burst; it is settling into an effort that belongs later. Use a first-mile ceiling or perceived-effort cue and allow congestion to prevent an overfast start rather than weaving to defeat it.
Split-time research from more than 133,000 half-marathon finishers found that faster performance groups maintained more even pacing, while slower groups showed greater speed decline. The analysis is observational and cannot prove that pacing alone caused the difference, but it supports avoiding unnecessary early variability.
An even race does not mean identical pace on every mile. Hills, wind, turns, heat, and aid stations change pace at the same effort. Aim for even cost: controlled breathing and form early, purposeful work in the middle, and optional commitment late if the conditions and body still support it.
If using run-walk, begin the pattern immediately. Waiting until tired turns a rehearsed pacing tool into a rescue response. Signal, move predictably to the side, walk briskly, and resume without a surge.

Adjust for weather before it forces the adjustment
Heat and humidity
Warm conditions raise the physiological cost of a familiar pace. Start by effort, reduce warm-up, use tested light clothing, and follow organizer and medical guidance. Do not wait for a target pace to become impossible before slowing.
The IOC heat consensus emphasizes event monitoring, heat acclimation, hydration, warm-up, and clothing. Its recommendations cover organized sport broadly, so apply them with current race communications rather than a universal temperature cutoff.
Cold and rain
The main challenge may be waiting rather than running. Use a permitted throwaway or donation layer, protect dry race clothing before the start, and avoid an impermeable jacket that causes overheating unless it was tested for the conditions.
Wet fabric changes rubbing and grip. Use practiced socks, anti-chafe, and a brimmed cap where helpful. Slow on painted lines, metal covers, and sharp turns.
Wind
Headwind raises effort even when pace drops; tailwind can hide heat. Run by effort, tuck into a legal group without crowding, and avoid surging to regain a split immediately after exposed sections.
Use the course map to identify direction changes, but remember that buildings and terrain can redirect wind. Treat the plan as a scenario, not a promise.
Run hills by effort and position
Uphill
Shorten the stride, keep posture tall from the ankles, and allow pace to slow. A hill is not a separate race. If the grade drives effort above the day's plan, a brisk walk may be the most efficient choice for a run-walker or finish-focused runner.
Do not attack the final meters to crest ahead of a group. Hold effort over the top until breathing settles; many runners spend the hill correctly and then waste the recovery with an immediate surge.
Downhill
Let gravity assist without reaching the foot far ahead. Quick, balanced steps and relaxed arms are more useful than leaning back and braking. The correct downhill pace depends on grade, surface, crowding, and your practiced skill.
Save passing for clear space. Downhill weaving and abrupt lateral moves add risk without meaningfully changing a 13.1-mile result.

Leah, targeting a 2:05 half marathon
Her long runs and pace sessions were mostly completed in 45–55°F weather. Race morning is 68°F with high humidity, and the organizer has issued heat guidance. Her tested plan uses aid-station water and one carried gel.

What to do when the race stops following the plan
GPS pace jumps
Use lap pace, elapsed time, course markers, and effort. Do not zigzag or accelerate under bridges to repair a signal error.
You miss a fuel
Take the next familiar opportunity with appropriate water. Do not double an unfamiliar concentration or panic because the schedule shifted by minutes.
A side stitch appears
Reduce pace, relax the exhale, and walk briefly if needed. Persistent or concerning pain is not something a content guide can classify; seek course support where appropriate.
The goal pace becomes unsustainable
Move to the conservative pace or run-walk plan, protect forward progress, and stop trying to win back time in surges.
You feel a concerning symptom
Stop and seek on-course medical help. Finish goals never outrank safety, and this guide cannot provide remote diagnosis.
Weather changes rapidly
Follow organizer directions, seek shelter if instructed, and accept cancellation or course modification. Personal determination does not override event safety decisions.
Prepare the finish before you reach it
Cross under control
Look ahead before a sprint, especially in a crowded chute. Keep moving after the line so runners behind can finish. Stop the watch only when it is safe to do so.
Accept the medal and supplies you want, but do not feel obligated to consume unfamiliar products immediately. Use normal fluids and food according to comfort and your established needs.
Navigate the finish area
Large events may route runners through a long secure zone before family access. Choose a meeting point by landmark, not 'near the finish,' and plan what happens if phones fail.
Change into dry layers and keep walking gently as appropriate. If you feel unwell, use official medical support rather than trying to reach a distant meeting point first.
Delay the race verdict
Do not decide the next goal in the finish chute. Immediate emotion, soreness, and disappointment or euphoria make every conclusion louder. Record facts, recover, and review splits and decisions after one or two nights.
A finish time is the outcome of training, pacing, course, weather, logistics, and the day. Use it as evidence, not a complete identity.
Prepare differently for a first finish and a time attempt
First-time finisher
Reduce the number of live decisions. Use a rehearsed run-walk ratio if applicable, identify every cutoff, and make finishing within controlled effort the primary outcome. The first miles should feel easier than the runner thinks the occasion deserves. Passing people, following an excited friend, or chasing a pace group can silently replace the actual plan.
Write practical milestones: settle by mile 2, take the first fuel on time, reach halfway without urgent breathing, and begin the planned walk before it feels necessary. These are execution goals the runner can control even when the final time changes with the course or weather.
Time-goal runner
Use an opening ceiling, a flat-course pace range, terrain rules, and a late-race decision point. Confirm whether the official pace group uses even splits, even effort, or a time cushion. The group's sign does not override the runner's evidence or the weather plan.
Set a conservative finish range before race morning. Switching early is a successful decision when target effort is already wrong; it is not an admission that training failed. A brittle target encourages the runner to hide information until the slowdown becomes much larger.
Experienced runner using the race as training
Define the workout before entering the corral: easy throughout, progression after a given mile, or a controlled race-effort block. Fuel and recover for the full distance even when the finish time is not important. The event atmosphere can turn an ordinary long run into an unplanned all-out effort within minutes.
Place the event inside the larger training plan. A supported training run still creates 13.1 miles of load, travel, standing, and schedule disruption. Do not add the week's missed workout afterward because the race was not labeled a goal.

Use a course preview to remove surprises, not prove fitness
A course preview can be a map review, video, drive, easy run over selected sections, or organizer description. Identify the start approach, early crowding, meaningful turns, hills, exposed weather sections, aid stations, and the finish entrance. Note whether the elevation graphic uses a compressed vertical scale that makes small changes look dramatic.
Do not race the entire course during the taper. If access is safe and permitted, an easy preview of a key hill or final mile can teach sight lines and transitions without becoming a fitness test. Respect closures, private property, traffic, and event rules; a route published for race day is not necessarily safe when roads are open.
Convert the preview into instructions. 'Hill at mile 8.6: shorten steps, take fuel before it, hold effort over the false summit' is useful. 'Course is hard' is anxiety without a decision. Keep the notes on the one-page race sheet so the preview reduces cognitive load rather than adding another file to remember.
