Base phase: make running repeatable
Base training is not merely slow running before the real work. It creates the conditions under which specific work can help rather than overwhelm.
Frequency before complexity
Choose the days you expect to keep through the plan. A runner moving from three to four days should make the new day short and easy before extending it. The goal is to normalize another exposure to running, not smuggle in another workout.
Use the talk test to protect easy effort. Full sentences should remain available. If pace varies because of hills or heat, preserve the effort and let the number change.
Build the long run from a routine distance

Keep frequency and most easy running stable when quality becomes more specific. A phase is an emphasis shift, not a total rewrite of the week.
Making peak week a personal-best mileage week
Peak specificity can arrive without peak volume. Hold mileage while practicing race effort and logistics if that produces the clearer rehearsal.
Cramming before taper
Missed sessions do not become more valuable because time is short. Protect the taper and race with the fitness you have.

Recovery is a recurring function, not only a final phase
Reduced-load weeks can appear inside base, build, and race-specific blocks. Their job is to lower total stress enough that the next block begins from stable training rather than accumulated strain. A common pattern uses two or three building weeks followed by one held or reduced week, but work and family calendars may determine a better rhythm.
Reduction can come from fewer miles, a shorter long run, less quality volume, or an extra rest day. Preserve some familiar running when it feels appropriate; a cutback does not need to erase the routine.
A holding week is different from a cutback
A holding week repeats the previous total and main sessions so the runner gets another exposure. A cutback intentionally lowers load. Holding works when training is going well but the new level is not yet established. Cutting back works when accumulated load or life stress makes repetition too costly.

Move the borders without losing the sequence
The worked map is an example, not a template to impose. If week two shows that the base is not stable, use week three as another base week and shorten the build or specific block later. Preserve the taper. If an experienced runner enters ready, the first controlled workout can arrive sooner while the fundamental sequence remains intact.
Transitions can also overlap. A base week may contain strides; a build long run may rehearse fuel; a specific week still contains mostly easy mileage. Phase names identify the dominant question, not the only activity allowed.
When reviewing a plan, color each week by its dominant job. A calendar with twelve identically hard colors has no phase structure even if the headings say base, build, peak, and taper.
