A half-marathon long run is the week's extended endurance session. Its first job is to make longer time on your feet familiar enough that you can keep breathing, pacing, fueling, and making decisions without the run becoming a race. Most long runs should be predominantly easy. Faster segments are optional tools for established runners, not proof that the session “worked.”

A runner whose longest recent run is 55 minutes should not copy a two-hour progression because it appears in an advanced schedule. Build a repeatable sequence. Duration
Choose a simple easy long run when the total time itself is near the edge of what you have recently repeated. The training question is, “Can I complete this duration with stable effort and recover?” Adding pace work would make the answer harder to interpret.
Specificity
Use controlled steady or race-pace segments only when the base duration is familiar. Specificity can teach goal rhythm, fueling, and concentration. It should not turn every Sunday into a race simulation.
Terrain
A rolling route prepares decision-making for a hilly race, but use effort on climbs and avoid aggressive descents. A flat route is better when the goal is to compare pace or rehearse race rhythm.
Fueling practice
Long runs that approach race duration are opportunities to rehearse familiar carbohydrate, fluid, carrying, and timing choices. This is experimentation in training, not a requirement to copy a universal product or dose.
Restraint
After a disrupted week, illness, race, or demanding workout, an easy shorter long run may be the most specific choice because it protects continuity. Missing one progression step does not create mileage debt.

How long should the longest run be?
There is no mandatory pre-race distance. Many runners benefit from building long runs into the 90–120 minute range, while beginners may gain more from a shorter repeatable duration and run-walk structure. Faster runners can cover more miles in the same time, so mileage alone creates false comparisons. Time communicates the load more honestly across abilities.
Use the longest run you have completed comfortably in the past two or three weeks as the starting point. Add a small amount—often 5–10 minutes—only when the previous duration did not disrupt the next several days. Insert a lighter long run every few weeks or whenever the surrounding training requires it. The familiar “10 percent rule” is not a scientific guarantee; progression should respond to the runner rather than a fixed percentage.

- Easy at RPE 3–4; steady at 5–6 with short-phrase conversation. Return to easy deliberately.

Race-pace block long run

Rolling-course rehearsal

- Repeat before adding more hills. Familiarity and even effort are the primary gains.

Fluid needs vary widely. Use thirst, conditions, access, and previous experience rather than forcing a rigid volume. Both under- and overconsumption can be problematic. Adding miles because you feel good
Finish the planned duration. Feeling strong is evidence the dose was manageable. Turn it into future progression after reviewing recovery, not same-day improvisation.

Start easy enough that pace naturally settles. Goal pace belongs in written blocks after easy duration, not in the first mile while excitement masks effort.
Increasing duration and adding a fast finish
Choose one stressor. Repeat the new duration entirely easy, or keep duration familiar and add a bounded steady segment.
Chasing average pace on hills
Use effort on climbs and let average pace go. Surging uphill and attacking descents creates a different, riskier session than controlled course preparation.
Treating missed mileage as debt
Do not add last week's missed miles to this week's long run. Resume at the last repeatable duration or step back when the gap was substantial.

Rebuild the long run after a missed week, illness, or race
One missed long run
Continue with the next planned week only when the surrounding training remained normal and the next duration is already familiar. If the next run was supposed to be a new high, repeat the last completed duration instead. Never add the missed miles to create a double long run.
Two or more disrupted weeks
Return to a duration that was comfortable before the gap, often 15–30 percent shorter than the planned peak, then rebuild in small steps. Remove steady and race-pace segments until easy duration is stable. Calendar urgency does not restore the training that did not happen.
After illness
Resume based on recovery and appropriate medical guidance, not a generic timeline. Start with shorter easy running and observe symptoms and energy. A long run is not the first test of whether you are well. When in doubt, delay the progression.
After a tune-up race
A hard 10K already provides a quality endurance exposure. The following day's long run should usually be replaced, shortened, or moved rather than completed as if the race were only a workout warm-up. Count the actual stress, not the original labels.
Use cutback long runs to make progression repeatable
A cutback is a planned shorter long run after one or more building weeks. It reduces duration so fatigue can settle while frequency and routine remain. For example, a sequence might move from 80 to 90 to 100 minutes, then return to 75–85 before building again. The exact pattern should reflect the runner, not a fixed formula.
Keep cutback runs genuinely easy. Adding a fast finish because the distance is shorter can erase the intended reduction. If you want a quality session that week, place a modest threshold workout elsewhere and preserve Sunday as the lower-load endurance day.
Cutbacks are also diagnostic. If the shorter week restores normal easy pace, sleep, and motivation, the previous build may have been appropriately challenging. If fatigue remains or discomfort grows, do not resume progression automatically. Review total weekly load, not just the long run.

Grade recovery with the next 48 hours
Immediately after the run, record total time, any faster segments, route, conditions, fueling, final RPE, and whether form changed. The most useful data arrives later: normal walking and stairs, sleep, appetite, unusual soreness, and the quality of the next easy run. A long run can feel triumphant at the finish and still be too large for the week.
Use a simple traffic-light review. Green: general fatigue settles, easy movement is comfortable, and the next run is broadly normal. Amber: soreness or low energy lasts longer than usual; repeat or reduce the next long run. Red: gait-changing pain, severe symptoms, or deterioration; stop progression and seek appropriate assessment. This system does not diagnose injury.
Progress only from green patterns, not from one green day. Two or three repeatable long runs provide better evidence than a single peak. The half marathon rewards durability across weeks before it rewards one spectacular Sunday.

Review your last three long runs. If duration is still growing or recovery is uneven, choose the foundational easy run. If the time is familiar and your race goal is evidence-based, select one structured format no more often than the week can absorb. Write the easy finish into the plan.
